Upgrading a tub faucet is a great way to improve the look and feel of any bathroom. Though a tub faucet is one small component in the bathroom, an outdated faucet can quickly detract from a bathroom’s style. Similarly, it can enhance the entire room when replaced with a modern piece. |
For homeowners interested in upgrading their tub faucet, installing a new fixture doesn’t have to require a long weekend project. The following guide will quickly walk through how to install a new tub faucet.
The Tools for the Job
The following tools are required for the installation of a standard tub faucet:
- Basin wrench
- Adjustable wrench
- Teflon tape
- Silicone sealant
- Screwdriver
Step-by-Step Installation Instructions
The following instructions are for a standard tub and shower faucet. Always consult the instructions accompanying a specific product purchased for further details on installation.
Prior to beginning installation:
- Flush plumbing lines to clear any debris.
- Shut off both supply lines after flushing.
Installation steps:
- Properly secure the valve body of the faucet set to the wood bracing using copper straps.
- Connect the valve assembly to the supply lines.
- Assemble the elbow and feed nipple. Screw into the bottom of the valve. Screw the tub spout nipple into the elbow. The nipple should extend out from the wall about 4-1/4 inches. If no shower is to be installed, use a 1/2-inch plug to close the top opening of the valve.
- Assemble the shower riser pipe and the elbow. Screw into the top of the valve. If no spout is to be installed, use a 1/2-inch plug to close the bottom opening of the valve.
- Place the shower flange over the shower arm. Apply the pipe compound to the threads on the long end of the shower arm. Screw that end into the shower riser elbow. Push the flange against the wall.
- Wrap Teflon tape around all the threads on the shower arm and hand tighten the shower head clockwise. Turn the water on and check for leaks. Any leaks will require minor tightening or adjustment. If the shower head leaks at the connection to the thread shower arm, tighten the connection some more by using a wrench.
- Apply pipe compound to the tub spout nipple and attach the spout to the nipple. Hand tighten. Apply Teflon tape to the inlet shanks and connect the supply lines.
- Turn on the water supply and check the connections for leaks. Place the handle on the valve stem and flush the lines by running hot and cold water uninterrupted for one minute.
