If you have a small bathroom in your home, you know the struggle that comes with storing your essential amenities. Even though you may have everything organized neatly, the bathroom still appears cluttered and you feel like you’re trapped in a box. To help maximize space and open up your washroom without tearing down your bathroom walls, here are some simpler (and cost effective) design and renovation tips from expert interior designers.
You can create a lot of open space with pedestal sinks, and floating basins and counter tops. If you’re going for a traditional bathroom design while trying to maximize its small space, pedestal sinks boast an old school aesthetic. Its single-leg structure is ideal for creating more space on the floor, where you can add some stylish baskets for storage. On the other hand, if you’d prefer a more contemporary design, floating basins like a wall-mount sink or floating counter tops with a vessel sink installed will help you achieve that present-day theme. A floating counter is a huge space saver as you’ll have plenty of storage space underneath for baskets or a vanity stool.
Reduce counter top clutter with a wall-mount faucet. Installing a wall-mount faucet will give your counter tops a tidier look while increasing your storage space capacity. It’ll also make it easier to clean the counter without having to wipe around a faucet and it’ll reduce water and toothpaste splatter from building up on the faucet itself as well. Meshing modern technology with traditional aesthetic, a wall-mount faucet will definitely give your bathroom a sleek, stylish focal point.
Brighten up your bathroom. Dimly lit bathrooms can give off an eerie vibe that’s less welcoming, but a brighter washroom has more appeal, giving the appearance of more space. This can simply be done by allowing more natural light to flow in through the windows. This may sound counter-intuitive considering curtains are meant to cover up light, but you could put up lighter shades of curtains that are more conducive to letting light through. However, if your bathroom doesn’t have windows, switch to bulbs that give off a whiter glow.
Build up and not out. Basically, it helps to utilize vertical spacing and wall space, especially above the toilet, by adding open glass shelves in an upward manner. You could certainly buy one of those shelf towers that are designed to go behind the toilet, but, remember, the point is to eliminate enclosures. Open shelving will still provide adequate storage space for your accessories and amenities without looking so closed off.
Building off of the previous tips, giving your bathroom a paint job using brighter colors will also create the illusion of additional space. Using those bright colors, use a vertical stripe design. The vertical pattern not only evokes the “build up” approach, it’ll also give the washroom a stylish two-tone look. In terms of color scheme, you’ll definitely want to coordinate the paint you choose with the finish of your plumbing appliances and other accessories, which should also match.
Implement the Snow White design with a “mirror, mirror on the wall.” If you have enough wall space after installing your open shelves, one neat trick to really give your bathroom the illusion of having more open space is with mirrors. Visually speaking, mirrors can double the space while adding more depth.
