Wall mount faucets are far from new, although they are trendy. In fact, some of the earliest indoor plumbing relied on these types of fixtures since sinks were often simple basins with no specific openings for hardware. Placement is important with these faucets since it’s possible to mount them higher or lower just by choosing a different location on the wall.
Installing the wall mount faucet is likely to cause splashing, regardless of the sink style. However, a deep or tall bowl-shaped sink is less likely to splash with a high faucet mounting pattern than an open vessel style fixture. Most faucets should be mounted from 3 to 6 inches above the level of the countertop. Installing the faucet higher—between 8 to 12 inches—creates more workspace under the spout of a kitchen faucet, but splashing is much more likely at this height.
The reach of the faucet is how far the spout extends out over the sink. For the best results, regardless of kitchen or bathroom placement, aim to keep the water falling right over the drain. This means that it’s best to choose the sink before finding a faucet to match. An extra-deep bathroom sink will require a faucet with matching reach, or the water running down the bowl may splash back up rather than smoothly draining. In the kitchen, the reach should also allow the side spray or pull-down spray to reach every bowl if a larger sink is installed.
Check for obstructions like low-hanging cabinets, backsplashes of different materials, wall sconces, or extra framing in the wall. There needs to be space to run the plumbing down through the wall relatively unobstructed, and drilling too many openings in the studs can weaken the wall. It may be necessary to install a deck-mounted faucet instead if there simply isn’t space in the wall cavity for the hot and cold water connections. A plumber can quickly determine if there’s enough space, but they may have to open up the drywall to find out.
