Sometimes you have to replace a bathtub drain, perhaps because the water drains slowly or a damaged drain starts leaking. Sometimes you want to give your tub a makeover, ideally without replacing the entire piece. A tub drain kit makes replacing the drain quick and easy so you can give your tub and bathroom a high-end look that’s functional and attractive.
A tub drain kit typically comes with two pieces: a stopper and an overflow plate, along with the hardware you need to complete the installation. A tub drain is a single piece. This difference in the number of pieces is important because the tub drain kit includes everything you need to replace the drain and the overflow plate. You don’t have to replace the old plumbing, and you don’t have to look at mismatched finishes on the stopper and overflow plate.
Tub drains come in a variety of styles and finishes. One way to categorize drains is by how they function.
You also find tub drains in an assortment of finishes to fit with any decor. Select from shiny, polished chrome, nickel, or brass; muted matte black or antique brass; or luxurious oil-rubbed bronze to give the tub an instant makeover.
You can install the new bathroom drain in three simple steps. Before you start, gather these supplies: a screwdriver, drain key or pliers, putty knife, and plumber’s putty.
1. Remove the existing drain. Depending on the type of drain stop you have, you may need to unscrew it or remove it by twisting. If the tub has an overflow plate, you’ll also need to take that out.
2. Replace the drain flange. Using a drain key or pliers, unscrew the exposed drain flange. Then scrape off the old plumber’s putty left behind. Add a bead of plumber’s putty to the new flange, slide a new gasket on the flange, and screw it into place.
3. Install the new stopper. Twist or screw in the new stopper. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for this step, as they can vary. Then test the seal by filling the tub partially with water.
