Tile is a great material for any bathroom because it can fit with a number of styles, it’s super low maintenance and it’s water resistant. However, there are various styles and colors of tile from which to choose. Here are a few different types of tile for the bathroom, and the advantages and disadvantages that come along with each one.
Vinyl
Vinyl tiles are simple to install and maintain. In fact, they’re long lasting and durable – warding off everything from scratches and stains to dents. Vinyl tile also absorbs noise, which is great if you have a big family. With vinyl tile, you have a large number of designs and hues to select, making it easy to fit whatever bathroom design you’re after.
Although there are few, vinyl tiles come with some disadvantages. Colored vinyl tiles can quickly fade when exposed to direct sunlight, so make sure your bathroom has curtains to prevent the sun’s rays from always hitting your floors. Vinyl flooring also doesn’t stand up well to sharp objects, so if something is dragged across the floor, the tiles will likely have to be replaced.
Ceramic
Ceramic tiles offer the same convenient maintenance as vinyl. Should you spill something, the tiles are easy to clean. Ceramic is also moisture resistant, slip resistant and durable. Unlike vinyl tile, direct exposure to sunlight won’t cause the colors on ceramic tiles to fade.
As for the disadvantages of this material, ceramic tiles can be very chilly. It often takes longer for ceramic to heat than other flooring materials. If you live in an area that is frequently cold, ceramic might not be the best option for you and your home.
Glass
One of the biggest advantages to using glass tile in your bathroom is appearance. Glass exudes a beautiful, luxurious look for a modern or contemporary bathroom design. The tiles reflect light to help open up the area, giving it a brighter and more spacious feel.
Glass tiles are going to be pricier than ceramic or vinyl tiles. Not only is the material expensive, but glass installation is a specialty. You’ll have to be willing to pay to have your glass tiles expertly installed. Dirt and grime also show up easily on glass tiles, so if you opt for this material, you’ll have to be willing to do the maintenance that comes along with it. In addition, glass isn’t as durable as other tiles – scratches and dents can easily show up on the surface. So if you do use glass tile, it’s recommended for a sink backsplash or a shower backsplash instead of flooring.
Metal
If you love the cool, contemporary look of metal, consider metal tiles for your bathroom. Metal tiles are durable and can even be recycled for an eco-friendly bathroom material. Metal is also resistant to allergens, water and bacteria, making it perfect for the bathroom.
Metal does have some disadvantages, however. It can often be quite slippery, which means you’re better off using metal tiles for a decorative backsplash. The material can also feel very cold to the touch, much like ceramic.
