What type of floor tile should you use in your bathroom?

Before you can choose your bathroom faucets and the type of clawfoot tub accessories that will complement your decor, you’ll need to begin with the foundation of any remodel: the flooring. In a bathroom, this likely means tile, as it’s a durable material that’s easy to clean and isn’t susceptible to the mold growth that can result from excessive moisture (hey – there’s nothing wrong with taking long, hot showers). Not sure where to begin? Here’s a basic rundown of some common types of floor tile:

Ceramic
Created from clay, ceramic tile is often chosen by homeowners due to the fact that it comes in many shapes, sizes, colors and patterns. This means you’ll almost certainly be able to find a type of ceramic tile that fits your bathroom design scheme. While the material is easy to maintain, it’s challenging to install, so this probably isn’t the best choice if you plan to go the do-it-yourself route.

Vinyl
Inexpensive and durable, vinyl is arguably one of the most popular types of tile flooring. It’s incredibly simple to install and comes in a multitude of patterns and colors. Plus, if one of the tiles becomes damaged, it’s easy to replace on your own.

Stone
Natural stone comes in many forms, all of which have different characteristics. Here are a few to consider:

• Granite: Granite is a very hard igneous rock that is normally used for kitchen counters. However, its durability and resistance to scratching also makes it great for floors in high-traffic areas of your home, such as the bathroom. Plus, its speckled appearance will give your bathroom a completely unique look.
• Limestone: Going for a rustic style of decor in your bathroom? Give limestone a try. This sedimentary rock generally comes in hues of brown and beige, and can either be kept rough or polished smooth. The only downside is that it’s vulnerable to stains and scratching, so it probably shouldn’t be used in a kids’ bathroom.
• Travertine: A sophisticated tile with a Tuscan look about it, travertine is a type of limestone that can be found in earthy colors. While it’s naturally porous, travertine can take on a more polished appearance when honed (i.e., ground down until smooth).
• Slate: For a more masculine bathroom, slate is a great choice. It’s naturally slip-resistant, which makes it ideal for bathroom flooring. Plus, this metamorphic rock is extremely durable and has a unique textured surface unless it’s polished.
