Bathroom amenities for multi-generational homes

Many homes don’t just house one generation, they have three! Children, parents and grandparents all living under one roof can make for a happy household. But the vast age difference often requires the home to have various amenities to help with everyday function. Here are a few bathroom design tips to make your home more accessible to all:

Replace fixtures

Bathroom faucets should be easy to turn on and off, even for those who may have joint issues. Single-lever faucets, for instance, will be easy to use for all generations.

Add a bath mat

Bath mats provide comfort and warmth when you step out of the shower or bath. But it’s important to make sure that the pad you choose is slip-resistant. In order to help the mat appeal to younger kids, consider selecting one that’s colorful and easily washable.
Install walk-in showers

A multigenerational bathroom should allow both kids and older adults to get in and out of the shower with ease. Instead of having to step over a ledge, opt for a walk-in shower. Here are a few other bathroom accessories to consider:
Add a safety bar to the side of the shower to help those stepping in and out. It’s also a good idea to have a bench so you can relax as you bathe. This amenity can also prevent older adults from slipping and falling in the shower. A handheld shower head is another useful amenity to have in the bathroom. Instead of trying to adjust the shower head, you can simply bring the water to you.

Hide outlets

Consider putting outlets inside of medicine cabinets and drawers. They will be kept out of sight and away from small children. Having outlets hidden in a cabinet or drawer also keeps them safe from water exposure.

Use dimmer switches

Having a dimmer switch in your bathroom can be helpful to all members of the family. Some may prefer a soft, warm light throughout the room, while others may want brighter illumination so they can see while they shave or apply makeup.
Reconsider the color scheme

You can make your small bathroom functional and spacious to accommodate your multigenerational family. Help your small bathroom appear larger by repainting your walls. You can never go wrong with an all-white color palette, which exudes freshness and cleanliness. If you want something a little more colorful, opt for a fun citrus hue or light-colored blue. Try adding a few extra mirrors to the wall to help bounce light around the room and cause the space to look larger.
