Picking a Sink

For the fastest remodeling experience, choose a sink with the same mounting style, size, and shape as the old one. This allows for almost seamless drop-installation. However, even changing the general size and shape of the sink isn’t too tricky, especially if the countertop is already being replaced simultaneously. Kitchen sinks that require additional framing and cabinet alterations, such as farmhouse sinks, will require extra time and costs for installation. It’s worth the effort if that’s the perfect sink for the room, but make sure it fits the design before committing to that style.

Pairing a Faucet

Faucets need to match the sink, so choose a new sink if the remodel calls for one before settling on a faucet. The first part to match to the sink is the number of mounting holes. Most kitchen faucets are three-hole designs, but single-hole faucets are also popular and easy to install. If the mounting pattern involves more than one hole, the faucet’s spread measurements must also mount the pattern on the sink. Modifying a sink or faucet to fit a different mounting pattern will require the help of a plumber, but it may be necessary for a homeowner that has their heart set on a specific model.

Choosing Specialty Faucets

Kitchen faucets are far from the only fixture that should be added during a kitchen remodel. Consider installing at least one other specialty faucet, such as:

• A pot filler, which is wall-mounted near the stove and swivels to fill large pots that would be too heavy to carry filled with water.
• A water dispenser faucet, connected to a high-quality filter that lasts longer since it’s only used for actual drinking needs.
• A bar prep faucet, creating extra space for washing up glasses and other small items away from the main sink.
