Blue is one of the most popular colors of 2017, especially for kitchen design. From serene sky blue to energetic turquoise, there are a variety of shades from which you can choose for the heart of your home. Even celebrity chefs have taken advantage of this colorful trend. Bobby Flay’s East Hampton kitchen features a contemporary shade of blue on his cabinets and kitchen table for a bright contrast from the dark backsplash. Mario Batali also shows his love of bright blue by painting the shade on his cabinets and kitchen island. If you’re looking for a new hue to try out in your kitchen, consider blue! Here are a few tips for implementing the color:
Choose between cool and warm
Blue is usually a cool color, but you can opt for shades of blue with warm undertones to give your kitchen a welcoming feel. Warm blues include denim, ocean blue and slate blue – all of these hues give your kitchen a comforting feel perfect for a vintage kitchen design. If you’re after a cool, contemporary motif, lean on cobalt, turquoise and ice blue. Any blues with yellow undertones provide a crisp, clean and modern vibe to your kitchen.
Opt for a mix
Can’t decide between cool and warm hues? How about both? You can combine two or three shades of blue to create a kitchen that pops. Just make sure that one color dominates, and use the rest of the shades sparingly, like in accessories and decorations. A light sky blue would contrast beautifully with a deep navy color for a dramatic decorative statement.
Decide how much to use
A room filled from floor to ceiling with blues is beautiful, and the same goes for a kitchen that uses blue sparingly. For a space big on blue, choose a shade for the walls, and contrast it with either a darker or lighter color on the kitchen cabinets to create a visually pleasing effect. If you want to use the color sparingly, choose certain blue accessories, like chair cushions, rugs, curtains or dinnerware.
Consider the floors
Never rule out a colored floor – it can help set the style tone for your kitchen and bring some life to the space. Keep the rest of your kitchen subdued with a palette of whites and other neutrals.
Combine with other colors
Using blue in your kitchen doesn’t mean that you can’t introduce other hues in your interior design as well. However, be careful about the shades that you match up with blue – each color can give off a different tone. For instance, pairing shades of blue with earth tones offers a fresh modern feel, while blue and yellow are a great combination for a rustic country vibe, and combining blue and green will create a natural and ecological motif.
