How to Clean a Clogged Shower Head

I know I’m not alone when I say that taking a shower is one of those things that I look forward to at the end of my day.

After a long, hard day of work and daily obligations, just cleaning and relaxing in the shower is one of the best feelings hands down. Feeling the vigorous spray of water hitting your sore muscles is like almost like drinking a glass of wine while sinking deep into a comfy couch.

However, that wonderful feeling can disappear if your shower head gets clogged. That is one of the worst things that can happen to your shower, but that can easily be avoided and fixed with a simple procedure:

  • In a large zip lock bag pour ½ cup of vinegar and ½ cup of water.
  • Carefully slip the bag over the shower head, making sure that all parts of the shower head are submerged in the vinegar and water solution, tie it with a twist tie or a zip tie.
  • Let it soak for a minimum of 4 hours, even better; let it soak overnight.
  • Remove the bag and rinse the leftover solution; carefully scrub the spray jets with an old toothbrush.
  • Turn the on the shower valve and let the water run for at least 1 minute before use.

If you are not completely satisfied with the results from the solution above, pour 1/3 cup of baking soda and 1 cup of vinegar and perform the same procedure as listed.

To prevent the future accumulation of lime and calcium, you can soak the shower head in a 50/50 solution of water and vinegar, every 2 to 3 months depending on the hardness of your water.
