A big kitchen is an asset for family gatherings and holidays that can overcrowd smaller spaces. Yet for the rest of the year, all that extra space can end up feeling a little empty. These four ideas for filling up a big kitchen will preserve the floor space for gatherings while still adding valuable features that make the room feel a little cozier. |
Set Up a Juice or Traditional Bar
Whether the bar is for fresh juices, homemade coffee, or a traditional set of liquors, it’s a great addition to a large kitchen. Include a separate prep sink or bar sink to keep cleaning easy. Bars double as a buffet serving space or dining areas during gatherings, so rather than limiting the space, these features expand the value of a big kitchen.
Introduce Islands
If a full-sized bar is a little much to add, try smaller islands instead. These combinations of worktops and enclosed or open storage are valuable additions to any larger kitchen. Mobile islands move right where they’re needed the most, and even wheeling out of the room entirely. Fixed islands are a little less flexible, but they can contain faucets and sinks to expand washing stations. Try a combination of both to fill up a space while keeping it easy to change as needed.
Try a Water Filtration Faucet
Big kitchens often require big fixtures, but getting a drink from a full pull-down spray faucet is tricky when someone else is using it to clean up. A separate water filtration faucet is ideal for allowing guests to refill their glasses without getting in anyone’s way. Since a separate faucet means that only drinking water is filtered, homeowners are always happy to find their filters go a lot longer between changes.
Build a Pantry
To really take up some extra space in a big kitchen, try building a pantry into the room. Wall-mounted shelves can be added as open storage space or enclosed with walls and doors to hide the canned goods and small appliances. There’s no need for a pantry to take the form of a closet when it can be built into the corner or along the wall of a larger room instead.
