Featured Image: @emilysuenetz Towel Bar: BA7973PN | Putting in a new towel bar is one of the quickest ways to customize a bathroom. Many new and older homes alike feature towel racks far from the shower and bath with none where they’re needed the most. Even a homeowner new to DIY renovations and upgrades can install a towel bar with a little preparation and the right tools. |
Gather together a power or hand drill and matching bits, a stud finder, a screwdriver, a hammer, and a spirit level. Find a stud to set one end of the towel bar and mark the point. If the other end of the bar isn’t lined up with another stud perfectly, mark it differently to remember it will need a drywall anchor instead of screw. Use the level to make sure the two lines are perfectly aligned at the desired height along the wall.
Use the drill to create two appropriately sized pilot holes for the anchors and screws that come with the towel bar. Hold the mounting bracket against the wall to measure the two points that need holes for each end of the towel bar. For the side aligned with the stud, simply screw in the two supplied screws to attach the bracket. Wall anchors must be used to attach the bracket attached to drywall without a stud behind. Each type of wall anchor varies, so follow the instructions supplied with the kit.
Attach the bar holders to the brackets and make sure they’re evenly and pressed gently against the surface of the wall. There’s a small screw on each holder to secure it to the bracket. Aligning the side with the screw downward helps hide its appearance without making it hard to access. Check that the holders are secure on the brackets before adding the bar. Unscrew and try again if they’re loose. Once the two bar holders are in place, gently and evenly press the bar on. A soft tug or two will verify a good fit, and then it’s time to hang the towels.
