An island can be an essential addition to a kitchen, especially larger kitchens. Islands occupy large spaces in the kitchen and provide more counter and cabinet space. An optional layout is to have an island equipped with a sink, this provides easy water and basin access to help when cooking weekly meals or for large gatherings. Let’s go through the benefits of having a sink on your island! |
Instead of pacing back and forth to the kitchen’s sink to rinse vegetables or clean your hands, island sinks allow functional access to water and also a quick place to put used utensils for later cleaning.

It can be a struggle trying to carry utensils, food and containers around the kitchen but islands minimize this juggling especially when installed with a sink for easy, cleaning accessibility. Having the main sink in the island allows for better socialization as well, instead of your family or guests speaking to your back, it creates a more personal exchange while you’re serving or preparing food.
There are several options for a sink ranging from a farmhouse sink, drop in sink and undermount sink. The distinct differences between a drop in sink and undermount sink is loosely described in their names. A drop in sink is installed from the top of the island and it (gently) drops into the counter top whereas the undermount sink is installed from underneath the countertop. Makes enough sense, right? Farmhouse sinks are also drop-in sinks but are exposed from the front and help tie the farmhouse design style into the kitchen.
Choosing the sink for your island is a personal and design focused decision. Drop in, Undermount and Farmhouse sinks are all great options and provide the accessibility needed in the kitchen.
