Traditional Tub Deck Mount Faucets

The traditional tub deck mount faucets — also known as the clawfoot tub filler or clawfoot tub faucet — is designed to work perfectly with pedestal, freestanding, or clawfoot tubs. Unlike wall mount, floor mount, or Roman tub fillers, the tub deck faucet mounts on the lip of the tub. The installation requires two pre-drilled holes and 7-inch centers.

During the late Victorian era, clawfoot bathtubs were all the rage. Homes of the more affluent featured lavishly appointed “dressing rooms” with sink, toilet, tub, and wardrobes all in the same room, something brand new for the era. Freestanding tubs of that time featured plumbing that was either floor mounted, front-mounted on the side of the tub, or mounted on the top of the tub, and so the traditional tub deck mount faucet was born. By the beginning of the 20th century, bathrooms in every American home looked similar to those in today’s homes.

While Roman deck mount faucets require a tub surround or decking and, depending on the design, don’t always call for pre-drilled holes, traditional tub deck mount faucets are installed directly onto the top of the lip and do necessitate pre-drilled holes. Like the Roman deck mount, many faucets include a hand shower, typically integrated with a “telephone cradle” style above the handles and spout.

Another difference between Roman and tub deck mount faucets is exposed plumbing. Because the Roman deck mount requires tub surround or decking, the plumbing is installed inside the decking walls, but traditional ones have exposed plumbing lines that connect to water either through floor or wall access. Some designers prefer this detail, feeling that it adds to the Victorian-era charm and opulence of the freestanding tub.
