Interior designers have a lot of tricks up their sleeve to achieve balance in a room. If you won’t be hiring an expert to help during your next vintage remodeling project there are a few insider tips you should know to get a professional result.
Symmetry is the best way to create a cohesive place. It provides a visual balance for the eyes, thus making the room more aesthetically appealing.
When a space lacks proportionality, two sides of a room can compete with each other for attention. Choosing the right color, lighting, scale and proportion can create a calming atmosphere. An identical reflection can work in a space, but it isn’t necessary to have the right balance. There are ways design a harmonious room with or without a mirror image.
Kitchen
Kitchens with an open floor plan can really show off symmetry because its visible from other parts of the house. But you can also practice balance in a closed layout.
Cabinetry – One of the easiest places to create symmetry is with cabinets. If you choose styles of different lengths and heights, mirror the layout on the opposite side of the room. Use the sink, or stovetop to serve as a central point. Also, consider mixing wooden cabinets with styles featuring glass doors.
Lighting – Shop for drop pendant lighting to place over your kitchen island. Purchase in even numbers to create the ultimate balance.
Seating – Bench or stool seating can also help to balance out the space. To make them standout, look for options in a contrasting color. If you will be using an odd number, be sure to place the extra chair directly in the center to stay with the flow of the room.
Accessories – Like noted before, symmetry doesn’t have to be an exact match. If you have a blank wall in your kitchen, hang paintings and artwork. To create a playful layout, arrange a large grouping on the wall. Balance can be secured by placing one large frame on one end and a few smaller styles on the opposite. While this isn’t perfect symmetry, each side of the wall is well proportioned.
Bathroom
Even though bathrooms are often much smaller than kitchen, it’s still important to find balance in this space.
Vanity – A his and hers vanity creates an exact mirror image. To make the symmetry extra pronounced choose vessel sinks that sit directly on the counter.
Lighting – Matching wall sconces strategically placed on either side of the vanity mirror creates perfect proportionality. Additionally, like in the kitchen, you can install pendant lighting over your clawfoot tub.
Mirror – A large oversized mirror can provide symmetry in one simple fixture. In contrast, you can add smaller mirrors of the same size to achieve a different yet equally balanced look.
Bathtub – Depending on the model you choose, a tub can help with the proportions of the space. Many styles have a symmetrical silhouette, but the units with a higher backrest can be balanced out by placing a vase with flowers on a shelf on the opposite end of the room.
