If you’ve ever been to Italy, you know that Italians do a lot of things right: They make amazing food, dress stylishly and know how to decorate beautiful spaces. Tuscany is known for its old world elegance and beautiful villas, so it’s becoming a very popular style for people’s homes. If you’re interested in remodeling your bathroom to emulate that Tuscan charm, take a look at this style guide:
Colors and texture
A major design choice for creating a Tuscan space is deciding on the perfect color scheme. To get the right vibe, go for earthy colors with warm undertones, generally in the red, orange and yellow family. Popular choices for Tuscan-inspired spaces are a neutral off-white or beige color, muted yellows, olive greens and deep reds. To really create an old world Italian feel, you should use texture to simulate stucco villas. Create visual texture using sponges to apply paint, or even do a do-it-yourself project using plaster to add texture to your walls before painting.
Metals
For the metal in your bathroom, including your faucet parts and cabinet pulls, stay away from anything silver or shiny. Oil-rubbed bronze bathroom faucets are great for Tuscan or Mediterranean styles because they’re dark with a matte finish. Try to find wrought iron accessories, like shelves and sconces, which emulate the Tuscan style beautifully.
Bathtub
If you’re completely remodeling your bathroom and are choosing a new tub, consider opting for a clawfoot tub. Acrylic clawfoot tubs are durable, charming, and will match the Tuscan vibe perfectly. If you decide to add a shower, use tiles in earth-tones and a shower head that matches the sink faucet.
Vanity
When designing the vanity, use darker wood for the cabinets, as light woods tend to seem a little more modern. Vessel sinks connote a rustic Italian style perfectly, so try a metallic or white vessel sink on top of the vanity. Then find a framed or gilded mirror in the same color or metal as your faucet.
Accessories
For the shower curtain, towels and decor think about choosing pieces that add a pop of color like deep wine-colored red or mustard yellow. Look for patterns with swirling loops and scrolls that complement any wrought iron pieces you use. Simple leafy patterns look great, and bring to mind the vineyards and rolling hills of western Italy. Try to avoid patterns that are too large or busy.
When you’re done creating your beautiful new bathroom, you’ll have the perfect Tuscan oasis for relaxing in a bath with a glass of Chianti!
